The single-family structure fire started in the garage of the property on Barber Lane in Martinez shortly after 11 a.m. Firefighters arrived on scene to extinguish the blaze and were surprised to find as many as 70 dogs and cats.
"We're not aware of any that have lost their lives and I'm also not aware of any that were injured, so it's somewhat of a miracle that we managed with a lot of help from animal control, PD and neighbors to get all of those dogs and cats out of that house," Contra Costa Fire spokesman Steve Hill told KCBS Radio.
The fire burned the garage and traveled into the second story of the house, encompassing a major portion of the home, but Hill said he's "cautiously optimistic" that all the pets have been rescued.
Three people live at the house — two of which safely escaped uninjured. The third resident was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
As he stood at the scene, Hill said he saw a dozen neighbors arrive, offering their assistance to Animal Control which is working to rescue the pets. Officials plan to send the animals to a breeder who will have the proper facilities to take care of them. Many of the dogs were Pomeranians.
