Dozens of staff members at UCSF and San Francisco General have tested positive for the coronavirus despite having the COVID-19 vaccination.
The transmission is not coming from inside the hospital, but rather from community spread, Dr. Lukejohn Day, Chief Medical Officer at Zuckerberg San Francisco General, told KCBS Radio.
“Through the month of July we have had at least 50 staff here that have tested positive for COVID-19, the vast majority of whom have been fully vaccinated,” he said.
However, the breakthrough cases aren’t as serious as what they’re seeing in hospital patients.
"Over the last two weeks, our number of patients being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 has increased well over 100%," Day reported. 95% of those patients are unvaccinated, however, so don’t let breakthrough cases fool you into thinking the vaccine is pointless, he said.
In the face of the more contagious delta variant San Francisco health directors predict that the Bay Area could be looking at more regulations soon.
