The incident happened at about 7:43 p.m., leaving the vehicle submerged in the water west of the Marina Blvd. intersection, police said. The vehicle was speeding westbound on University Ave before the crash.

The victim's cause of death isn't yet clear, Berkeley Police Department Public Information Officer Byron White told KCBS Radio. "We're going to have to recreate as best as we can based on where the vehicle was found and where it left the road and into the water."

Rescue divers were called out to retrieve the body, per Berkeleyside.

Berkeley police are investigating.
