SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – An East Bay middle school student died on Sunday due to a "severe medical emergency" suffered during a football team practice at a Contra Costa County high school.

The student, Braden Fahey, was a youth football player for the Clayton Valley Athletic Association. The emergency occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. while the team was practicing at Clayton Valley Charter High School – which is used as a facility for youth sports leagues in the area – however Fahey was not playing football at the time, a spokesperson told The Mercury News.
Fahey died after being rushed to the hospital.
It's unclear what caused the medical emergency.
Friends of Fahey organized a GoFundMe to help his family with medical, burial and memorial expenses. The fund has raised $64,855 as of publication, nearing its goal of $75,000.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Braden Fahey – a son, brother, cousin, friend, teammate, and so much more in our community," organizers wrote on the GoFundMe. "We are all devastated by the tragic loss of Braden."
KCBS Radio reached out to the Clayton Valley Athletic Association for comment and did not receive a reply prior to publication.
