Entire Oakley school board resigns after skewering parents on hot mic

The entire Oakley Union Elementary School District Board of Trustees resigned Friday over a hot mic incident two days prior.

Superintendent Greg Hetrick announced the resignations of Board Members Lisa Brizendine, Richie Masadas, Kim Beede and Erica Ippolito in a letter on the district's website.

The board members were caught making disparaging remarks about parents during a virtual meeting Wednesday night, not realizing the conversation was being live streamed to the public. They were discussing the agenda before the meeting started and several complained about the pushback they were getting from parents over school reopening.

"(Parents) don’t know what we know behind the scenes and it’s really unfortunate that they want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back," Lisa Brizendine said.

Other comments were made, too.

"My brother had a delivery service for medical marijuana...clientele were parents with their kids in school," said Richie Masadas, responding to Brizendine's comments.

Kim Beede, referencing complaints about school reopening posted to social media, unleashed an expletive-filled phrase: "I honestly don't care about all that. But, you know what? Are we alone? Bitch, if you're gonna call me out, I'm gonna f-k you up. Sorry. That's just me."

An online petition calling for the resignation of trustees in response to the incident gathered over 6,200 signatures.

The superintendent of the district has apologized for the incident, as have board members.

According to California Education Code 5094, current county board members will serve as interim OUESD board members until the positions are officially filled.
