The collision occurred around 3:40 p.m. at the grocery store on Redwood Road in Castro Valley, California Highway Patrol officer Daniel Jacowitz told KCBS Radio.

Responding officers found a car completely inside the building near the checkout lines.

Four people, including a 5-year-old boy, were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries which Jacowitz described as mild to moderate. Four other victims were treated at the scene.

The driver, identified as an 88-year-old man from Hayward, stayed at the scene to cooperate with law enforcement.

Jacowitz said there were no signs the driver was impaired. Investigators are working to determine what caused the accident, but Jacowitz said the man may have confused the gas and brake pedals or made some kind of other error while parking.

Store management declined comment to KCBS Radio on Friday morning except to say the store would remain closed.

The front window that the vehicle barreled into has been entirely boarded up and the main entrance is blocked off.
