Officials are telling people to avoid the area of Russia Avenue and Prague Street in San Francisco's Excelsior due to damage caused by the windy weather. "Specific to Russia Avenue, there's construction material and or parts of a roof that have flown off of a specific building onto the street affecting several parked cars," Fire Captain Jonathan Baxter told KCBS Radio. "Luckily these were all parked cars, we have no injuries associated to that specific incident."
Throughout the city, fire crews are also receiving numerous calls about downed wires and trees, as well as some unexpected outcomes of the wind. "We had a sign, we're not sure what type of sign it was, hit a pedestrian causing some minor injuries, so it's a great reminder that we can see the wind, I'm sure you can see it if you're out and about as we do, please secure some of your loose items whether it be at your private home or your business," Baxter urged.
Northwest winds are blowing 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts of 65 miles per hour in San Francisco and in the wider Bay Area. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and a Wind Advisory into Wednesday for parts of the Bay Area and the Central Coast, including the city.
"If you see a tree down, if you don't believe it's going to affect an injury then please call 311. If you think it's going to or you're not sure it’s going to cause injury then call 911. If you see any wire down please do not approach that wire and call 911. We will have the professionals determine if it’s energized or not," Baxter warned.
A cold front is expected to hit the region later in the week, bringing more wind, rain and a possibility of snow in low elevation areas.
