Some farmworkers in Santa Clara County got a COVID-19 vaccine Sunday as part of a new site launched by Monterey Mushrooms in Morgan Hill, Santa Clara County and The United Farm Workers.

One Monterey Mushrooms employee told KCBS Radio that he feels "a little bit more secure" now that he’s had the shot.

"We need to collectively get the vaccines to farmworkers, instead of having farmworkers go and seek them out," said Bonita Rivera, National Vice President of The United Farm Workers.

She said this site is a “great example of a collaboration that works," and emphasized that this site is a great start in the push to get farmworkers the vaccine. This site could be a model for others to come.

"It’s really important that we see farmworkers as essential workers, and we treat them that way," said Bonita.

Dr. Sara Cody, a public health officer for Santa Clara County was on site on Sunday.

"We are hearing more and more each day about these vaccines," said Dr. Cody, "they are safe, they are extraordinarily effective, and we now have three of them." The Johnson & Johnson vaccine was given emergency authorization by the FDA on Saturday.

More vaccines will be available to farmworkers at the site on Wednesday.
