Police are searching for the driver of a BMW which ran a red light and caused a multi-car traffic collision which left one person dead Thursday night in downtown San Jose, authorities said.

The crash, which was reported at 10:32 p.m., occurred when a 2005 black BMW traveling westbound on Santa Clara St. sped past a red light at the 10th St. intersection, striking a 2010 Nissan SUV driving southbound and causing it to flip into a nail salon storefront.
One male passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and another passenger were hospitalized for "moderate to major" injuries.
The deceased man’s identity has been withheld until notification of his next of kin.
The BMW then collided with a black Acura which was stopped in another lane, however that male driver was left uninjured.
The male driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot immediately after the fatal collision.
An investigation and search for the suspect is ongoing.
The corner business which the vehicle careened into was boarded up on two sides Friday morning and a mailbox was also smashed on the sidewalk as a result of the hit-and-run.

This is San Jose's 41st fatal traffic collision this year and 42nd victim.
