U.S. District Judge Edward Davila read the verdict on Friday afternoon in San Jose. Holmes has been sentenced to 11 years and three months.
This comes after she was found guilty in January of this year for four charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Holmes was facing a maximum sentence of 20 years for defrauding investors in her company over claims that her blood test machines worked, when they did not.
Amidst his sentencing, Davila did reflect on the good that Holmes had done – and put forth the question that many feel is still unanswered – what motivated her actions.
Holmes herself testified before the sentence was delivered and offered an apology to those who had been affected by her actions and promised to do what she could to make things right.
Holmes’ trial was a lengthy one, which began in September of last year and after she was found guilty in January her sentencing experienced delays.
The other main player in Theranos’ rise and fall, Holmes’ former partner Sunny Balwani is expected to be sentenced on Dec. 7. He was found guilty of 12 counts of conspiracy and fraud, according to reporting by Axios.
Holmes will begin her sentence early next year. There is a strong chance the sentencing will be appealed.
