Following a sudden announcement, beloved Bay Area-based Fry’s Electronics has shut its doors for good.

The signs of decline for this homegrown electronics icon have been easy to spot for anyone who stopped by a store over the last year. "There’s just less and less and less merchandise," said Judy, one of many longtime customers who stopped by Fry’s original Sunnyvale location only to find a printed out note informing them of the closure.

In the end, Fry’s had trouble operating at the capacity it once did.

"This looks like an inevitable conclusion of the path they were on," said retail analyst Neil Saunders. "Nevertheless, it’s another loss for retail and Fry’s has a lot of fans out there. It’s a very sad day for them."

Fry’s was founded in 1985, catering to the do-it-yourself electronics crowd.

"Unfortunately, those days are long since gone," Saunders added. "We do still have businesses build their own computers, but they’re far fewer in numbers."

That, the shift to online retail and the coronavirus pandemic’s tight squeeze made it impossible for Fry’s to survive.
