San Jose residents were evacuated from their homes Wednesday morning after a natural gas line was ruptured.

In the area of Race St. and Eugene Ave. at 9:54 a.m., a steel gas line was accidentally struck with mechanical equipment causing a leak, PG&E reported.

A spokesperson from the utility company told KNTV that the leak was created by a third-party contractor not affiliated with PG&E.

Evacuations were ordered for all San Jose residents within a 900-foot radius of the leak, impacting approximately 320 properties west of downtown San Jose near the SAP Center, the San Jose Fire Department reported.

A shelter was opened by the city and the American Red Cross at the Bascom Community Center, located at 1000 S Bascom Ave. However, it was closed Thursday morning.

Some people were forced to leave their pets during the hurried evacuation.

PG&E estimated that the gas leak will be capped by noon on Thursday and residents will be allowed to return to their homes.
