Good Samaritan Hospital’s top administrator is stepping down following a scandal involving inappropriate COVID-19 vaccine distribution.
The hospital’s CEO, Joe DeSchryver, submitted his resignation Tuesday morning, reported San Jose Spotlight. DeSchryver told staff in an email he was leaving for "career advancement opportunities" and that he would no longer be with HCA Healthcare, the hospital’s parent company.
"It has been an honor to serve as your leader for the past four years, including the most challenging year in healthcare,” DeSchryver wrote in the email obtained by the publication.
DeSchryver’s resignation comes weeks after the hospital allowed teachers and staff at an affluent Los Gatos school district to receive COVID-19 vaccines by pretending to be healthcare workers. Staff were told they could sign up for vaccinations using the health care worker selection on the hospital’s website.
According to the Mercury News, the improper access was facilitated by a doctor affiliated with Good Samaritan whose relative works at the district. The invitation was reportedly tied to the district’s fundraising during the pandemic to donate meals to the hospital's health care workers.
Good Samaritan permanently closed its COVID-19 vaccine clinic in February.
