San Francisco’s Great Highway reopened on Monday morning for the first time in over a year.

While commuters are thrilled, many who live in the area have mixed feelings about the return of cars and trucks to the popular walking and biking boulevard.

The four-lane highway along Ocean Beach was shut down in the early months of the pandemic to make room for more people walking about biking, and some residents wanted it to stay that way.

The closure has clogged up neighborhood streets with cars and made it a lot harder to get to Ocean Beach.

On Sunday, hundreds turned out to protest the reopening. "If I had to vote I’d say keep it shut down, even though it’s an inconvenience," said East Bay surfer Neil.

In a compromise, city officials decided to continue to close the Great Highway from Golden Gate Park to Sloat Garden Center for part of Fridays, weekends and holidays.
