Famed Hawaiian-Japanese brunch restaurant "Morning Wood" is reopening in San Mateo later this month, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The spot closed its original San Bruno location last spring when the owners, Chad and Monica Kaneshiro, replaced it with a new Hawaiian snack shop and general store called "Diamond Head," which has become popular in its own right.

Morning Wood was a staple of the Peninsula food-scene since the two owners, who previously worked at various fine dining restaurants in the Bay Area, opened it in 2017. The restaurant's menu featured a fusion of Hawaiian, Japanese and Korean influenced flavors that drew long lines daily.

Morning Wood's new iteration, opening at 514 Peninsula ave. in a space twice as big, will bring back both fan-favorites and new twists including matcha mochi pancakes, katsu french toast, "hapanese" breakfast, kimchi fried rice with spam, and kalbi steak and eggs.

"The food will be reflective of what we did in the past but we’re hoping to take it up a notch and get a little more creative and inventive," Chad Kaneshiro told the paper.

He added that the menu will be slightly more condensed than before so the team can focus on quality.

In addition, the owners plan to mainly use a reservation system with limited walk-ins in order to cut down on the long wait times which the previous Morning Wood was known for.

Morning Wood's hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. It opens in August, though no exact date has been announced.
