Fireworks returned to Bay Area skies for the Fourth of July holiday, one year after shows were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most notably, San Francisco hosted its traditional celebration near Pier 39 and sent booming pyrotechnics into the air around 9:30 p.m. above the bay.

Thousands of people gathered along the waterfront, packing Fisherman’s Wharf and Aquatic Park. Officials were forced to close Pier 39 to additional spectators by 8:45 p.m. according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Multiple other communities across the Bay Area set off big displays, including Santa Clara, Gilroy High School and Morgan Hill.

In addition, Independence Day parades returned to both Half Moon Bay, with its annual ‘Ol Fashioned 4th of July Parade’, and Orinda.

"The fact that we’re here and weren’t here last year makes this parade more special even though its tailored down a little bit," Jessica Vasisht, an Orinda resident who attended the parade, told KNTV.

Despite many celebrations returning, many prominent cities did not host their usual pyrotechnic shows, including Benicia, Berkeley, Mountain View, Redwood City and San Rafael.
