San Francisco's iconic cable cars have been out of service since the start of the pandemic and, as of last summer, there was no timeline on bringing them back.

As the city progresses to the state's red tier for the first time in 2021, Mayor London Breed has guaranteed that they'll be back on San Francisco's streets at some point this year.

SFMTA Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum noted in February that bringing the cable cars back would be a big lift. Former SFMTA Executive Director Steve Heminger went a step further, saying it would be a symbolic notice the city is back.

At this time, there is no official projection for a return.
