A 24-year-old man faces life in prison if convicted on a charge of raping an 8-year-old girl in her San Jose home, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.
Dupree Hornsby was arraigned Tuesday and is being held without bail at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, according to court records. He faces "other serious felonies" in addition to the rape charge, officials said.
Police arrested Hornsby on Aug. 6, a mile away from a home in which the District Attorney's Office said a "stranger" broke into and sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl. That person grabbed the girl while she was playing and locked her in a room before the assault, according to officials.
The alleged assailant fled the house, and the girl later described him to police. Hornsby matched the description and was arrested "hours" later, according to District Attorney Jeff Rosen.
"This nightmare of a crime has shaken all of us," Rosen said, crediting the "alert" police officer for making an arrest.
Hornsby's next court date has not yet been scheduled, according to court records.
