
A Berkeley man was arrested Wednesday for attempted murder, among other charges, after a traffic altercation on I-880 led to shooting and a police chase through the streets of Fremont that ended in a major crash.
California Highway Patrol received a report around 4:35 p.m. of a shooting which stemmed from an traffic altercation on southbound I-880 at Industrial Pkwy. Authorities arrived on the scene to find the suspect, 28-year-old Kevin Sanders, driving recklessly on Decota Rd. and a pursuit ensued.
Officers chased him through Fremont city streets before catching him after he collided with two cars in the area of Automall Pkwy. and Grimmer Blvd.
Police said Sanders and the victims of the collision were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. The victims were not injured during the shooting, but one bullet hit their vehicle.
"I went to a different lane, then (the suspect) went to the side and shot through the passenger side," the driver, who did not want to be identified, told KPIX. "And after that, he just took off and I was chasing him through the side of the road. I didn’t want him to get away."
Sanders was booked in Alameda County Jail on charges of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, felony evading, felony hit-and-run and resisting arrest.
