San Francisco police have arrested a man accused of an unprovoked stabbing attack on a dog in the city's Bayview District.

The incident happened near Shafter Ave. and Jennings St. at about 5:50 p.m. on Oct. 27, police said. Officers said a 50-year-old woman claimed she had been sitting in a parked vehicle "when a male without provocation brandished a knife at the victim, threatened the victim, then proceeded to stab the dog through the vehicle window and walked away."

The dog – a Terrier mix – was taken to a nearby animal hospital with unspecified life-threatening injuries.

Authorities later arrested Derrick Juan Strong, 35, near the scene of the stabbing on "probably cause." He had a knife in his possession, though it was not immediately clear if officers believe that was the weapon used in the stabbing.

The dog is expected to recover and "is now at home," police added.

The woman wasn't hurt.

The investigation remains open. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411.
