On June 1, Clifford Stewart took the T-Mobile sign from the walkway and threw it in the street. A 38-year-old Hispanic female employee saw the incident and she and her 33-year-old Asian co-worker left the store to grab the sign and put it back, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said in a release.

Stewart started screaming "(expletive) Chinese, you don’t belong here" and "stupid Mexicans" while the two employees were returning the sign, the release said. The female employee said she was going to call the police and then Stewart kicked her in the stomach and punched her in the face.
The woman was hit so hard that she lost sight in her left eye for a short amount of time, the release said.

She was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries.

The male employee stepped in to help his co-worker and Stewart ran to the Sports Center store nearby where he was arrested, the release said. While being arrested he "verbally abused" and threatened to kill one of the officers.

The Santa Clara District Attorney's office has charged him with assault, hate crimes, vandalism and threat against a police officer.

Stewart was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at 1:30 at the Palo Alto Courthouse. He faces time in prison if convicted.
