Man with knife shot, killed by San Francisco police

San Francisco police announced on Friday that a man has died after being shot by an officer.

At around 8:05 a.m., officers responded to the 900 block of Folsom St. after receiving reports of a person with a weapon.

When they arrived at the scene, officers found a man with a knife inside a residential building. "During this encounter, officers felt the need to discharge their weapons," Spokesperson Robert Rueca said in a statement.

After shooting the suspect, police immediately rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The man was transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center with life threatening injuries where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are not providing specific details on how many gunshots were fired, but did state that two officers made contact with the man.

The man was previously known to police.

His identity and past medical or criminal history has not been released.
