The shipment was imported from overseas as part of the federal government's "Operation Fly Formula." A plane carrying 95,000 tins of infant formula touched down at Los Angeles International Airport, as seen in a video tweeted on Sunday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The governor's office told KCBS Radio that some of the formula is expected to arrive in the Bay area next week.
"While I commend the White House for initiating Operation Fly Formula, I think it's really important for us to take a step back and really think critically in regard to...why is it that our partnering and our neighboring countries have this surplus of formula to share?"
Dr. Ifeyinwa Asiodu, Assistant Professor at UCSF's Department of Family Health Care Nursing, as a guest on KCBS Radio's "As Prescribed" on Thursday.
"Ninety percent of our formula market here in the U.S. is really led by two companies," Asiodu explained. "So when one of those companies shuts down operations in just one of their factories it sends the market into somewhat of a tailspin."
She added that more family-friendly policies overseas mean there is less of a reliance on formula.
