SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) –  Crews have been unable to pull a Harley Davidson out of the water after the motorcycle went careening over the side of the Bay Bridge on Thursday morning.

For more, stream KCBS Radio now.

The crash occurred just before 10 a.m. on the upper deck of the Bay Bridge when a Mini Cooper merged into a motorcycle and sent the rider flying.

The bike then flew much farther.

"The bike then flew out of control, where it catapulted itself over the wall of the bridge," San Francisco California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Andrews told KCBS Radio.

The rider was able to take themself to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries and crews set out to pull up the Harley.

"We did request a dive team to respond," Andrews said. "The Berkeley Fire Department responded out and attempted to locate the motorcycle unsuccessfully."

The conditions weren't right, and the tide was too high. Andrews said they believe they know exactly where it sank and are going to keep attempting to extract it.

"There is an issue with both the fuel and the motor oil that was within the bike," he said. "We do not want that to continue to contaminate the water."

Andrews added that in his over two decade career, he can't remember another time when a vehicle has gone over the side of the Bay Bridge and into the water.
