A Muni operator has passed away from COVID-19 complications.
Muni and local union officials made the announcement Tuesday.
SMFTA Transportation Director Jeffrey Tumlin said the operator had been on long-term leave since before the coronavirus pandemic started, and "had not come into contact with anyone in recent months."
"Our sympathies of course are with the family, who is dealing with this tragedy on top of everything else from the compounded impact of the pandemic," Tumlin said in a YouTube video posted late Tuesday.
"The loss of one union member is one too many," said Roger Marenco, president of the Transport Workers Union Local 250-A. "Our entire TWU family, along with the MTA family, is feeling this terrible loss."
The operator’s name will not be released.
In all, Tumlin said 90 Muni employees have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Tuesday night.
"In nearly all cases we’re fortunate that our employees experienced only moderate symptoms," Tumlin explained. "As is our protocol, we trace every case and notify other staff who have been in close contact with the individual."
Tumlin added that Muni’s positive rate "remains lower than the city as a whole."
