Napa County will require everyone to wear masks when indoors in workplaces and public settings regardless of vaccination status, health officers announced late Thursday.

The mandate will begin Friday at 12:01 a.m. Napa County will become the eighth county in the Bay Area requiring masks indoors, leaving Solano as the lone Bay Area county not requiring masks in indoor public settings.

Seven Bay Area counties and the City of Berkeley announced a joint mandate requiring universal masking in indoor situations whether residents are vaccinated for COVID-19 or not earlier this week.

The order came "in light of the recent significant increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Napa County, due primarily to the more transmissible delta variant." County health officials said the vaccine is the best and most effective way to prevent the spread of virus.

Evidence shows that even against the delta variant, fully vaccinated individuals have a substantial protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death, officials added.
