A Bay Area police department is admitting it made a mistake after a suspect in the mass retail theft of a Walnut Creek Nordstrom was accidentally released from custody.

Following an investigation led by ABC7 News, it was revealed that defendant Joshua Underwood, 32, was released from Martinez Detention Facility on Nov. 24 due to a "computer input error," Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Station investigators called Underwood on Monday and learned that he and his family believed all charges against him had been dropped despite being detained for robbery, conspiracy and burglary just four days before.

Underwood was originally arrested during the massive smash-and-grab of a Walnut Creek Nordstrom on Nov. 20 that involved 80 or more individuals.

Authorities announced on Tuesday that Underwood had been taken back into custody on charges of robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and organized retail theft. He is being held on a $140,000 bail.
