Oakland restaurant pays homage to Black cuisine

Soul Slice is dishing out modern soul food in the Golden Gate District of Oakland, but with a peculiar twist to the Southern classics.

"Soul Slice represents contemporary soul food, the goal is to honor the tradition but to also be creative. Using modern cooking techniques, with a play on the ingredients, but to also honor the heirloom ingredients of African cuisine," Founder and CEO Karter Louis told KCBS Radio's "Bay Current" on Tuesday. "It's an homage to my culture. I've done a lot of restaurants, but never paid homage to my own people."

Soul Slice focuses on Southern recipes and dishes, but puts its own style on the menu, like its signature "Soul Food Pizza," which features traditional ingredients lathered onto a handmade, biscuit crust. "There's nothing more American than a biscuit," Louis said as he listed off their pizza recipes.

Soul Slice has a series of biscuit pizzas, including a Cornmeal Chicken Pizza as well as a black-eyed peas version of the recipe. "The biscuit is the original food of America," he said.

Louis opened up Soul Slice on Juneteenth 2021, as many Bay Area restaurants were losing customers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Louis believed it was the perfect moment to open his restaurant for the Oakland community. "Food is healing, and I had a sense of urgency." Louis added.

Soul Slice is currently open for private dinners and events.

The kitchen won't return to its full-time hours until the first week of spring.
