A protest against fatal police shootings drew hundreds of people to downtown Oakland Friday night, but quickly turned violent.
The Oakland Police Department tweeted that 250-300 protesters assaulted a community member and officer, broke windows, spray-painted buildings, set debris fires and set a car on fire.
The destruction was caused by individuals who split off from the main group, which was protesting the deaths this week of 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Chicago and 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Minneapolis.
The protest was declared an Unlawful Assembly and the crowd dispersed at about 11 p.m., officers said.
No arrests were made and no citations were issued, according to authorities.
