Oakland spa closes 'until further notice' after fatal shooting

An Oakland spa is closed "until further notice" as police investigate a shooting in which an employee allegedly fired at her co-workers, critically wounding one, before fatally shooting herself.

Kume Spa emailed customers on Tuesday night to announce it was indefinitely closing its Grand Avenue location near Lake Merritt, hours after police responded to a call of a shooting in progress.

"This attack on our employees was devastating and traumatic for us," the email said.

Police responded to reports of a shooting in progress just before 10 a.m., according to Oakland Police Department Public Information Officer Kim Armstead.

The East Bay Times, citing authorities, reported that a 49-year-old Berkeley woman, who worked at the spa over the last year, was the shooter. Authorities told the paper that a 46-year-old man, also a spa employee, was the first person the woman shot at. Other employees at the spa were fired at but not hit, before the woman eventually shot herself.

The Oakland Police Department confirmed in email to KCBS Radio on Wednesday afternoon that the suspect and victim were both spa employees, and that the former had died. A spokesperson said it "will not confirm information being reported by other media outlets."

Armstead on Tuesday said police found two people who sustained gunshots and began rendering aid after establishing a perimeter.

Both shooting victims were taken to a local hospital, where one of the individuals died from their injuries. The other was listed in critical condition.

Armstead said police do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence, nor does it present a current threat to the community.

No other information was available.
