Oakland students are demanding that the school district increase COVID-19 protocols or switch to remote learning.

Through an online petition, students are putting pressure on Oakland Unified to increase testing, provide KN95 masks for everyone and add outdoor eating areas at each school. If their demands are not met, students said they'll go on strike.

"Students are not comfortable with going to school with the rising cases of COVID-19," students wrote. "We must go back to distance learning until the cases go down again."

Over 200 students have signed the petition in support of their classmates. The district has until Jan. 17 to meet the demands.

Friday, Oakland teachers organized a "sickout" in protest of the in-person classes and lack of COVID-19 safety at district schools. 500 teachers called out sick and 12 schools were closed.
