The Oakland Unified School District on Monday lifted its outdoor mask mandate, nine days after California no longer required masks for students and staff regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. District officials announced the change in an email to parents on Friday.
"We are continuing to work with our labor partners and other stakeholders to determine the future of our indoor masking requirement after April 15, 2022," the district wrote in Friday's email.
The Oakland Education Association didn't respond to KCBS Radio's emailed request for comment about that status of negotiations over the district's indoor mask mandate. An Oakland Unified School District spokesperson declined to comment.
Following a surge in coronavirus cases this winter amid the omicron variant's spread that prompted staff absences, protests and school closures in January, the district and the Oakland Education Association reached an agreement on Jan. 24 to provide KN95 masks to all students, staff and expand COVID-19 testing access.
As part of the agreement, the district will provide at-home tests to all staff and students by the end of next week ahead of a potential surge in coronavirus cases following the district's spring break. Students and staff will need to test on April 8 and April 10 before classes resume on April 11.
