Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order allowing Californians ages 70 and older to renew their driver's licenses via mail as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
The order, signed by the governor Wednesday, gives vulnerable senior citizens flexibility on appointments with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Previous executive orders gave Californians ages 70 and older extensions on license renewals.
Most other drivers are also eligible to renew their licenses online or by mail.
The department estimated roughly 860,000 seniors visit offices every year to apply for updated licenses. The new order will last until Gov. Newsom modifies its provisions or the state of emergency is lifted.
