A pedestrian was struck and killed by multiple vehicles on the busy I-680 early Wednesday morning in San Jose.

The fatality occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. on the highway just north of Jackson Ave., according to the The Mercury News.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and pronounced the man dead. He has not been identified. Authorities told the paper that the man was hit by an initial vehicle and struck again by at least one car.

No other information was immediately available.

The fatal collision forced officials to briefly shut down northbound I-680 near Jackson Ave., causing a large backup during the morning commute.

The two left lanes have since been reopened, while the right two lanes remain closed. KCBS Radio Traffic reported that the closure has caused a jam through southbound I-280 through downtown San Jose on 10th St. and northbound Highway 101 near Blossom Hill Rd.
