Students at Casa Grande High School are expected to celebrate graduation on June 10, the day on which the threat against the school is aimed at.
This comes after the recent tragic shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Some Bay Area residents are also already on edge after an alleged bombing and mass shooting plot at Berkeley High School was foiled by police.
"We take all threats seriously, and we want to keep you informed and equipped with the information you need to support your children. It pains me to think that anyone in our community would make a threat like this," said Superintendent of Petaluma City Schools Matthew Harris in a news release on Wednesday.
"Any threat of violence weighs heavily on our community, and I know that our current national climate makes this news harder to carry than ever," he said.
The Petaluma Police Department is working with Casa Grande High School staff and the FBI to determine the credibility of the threat and identify any potential suspects.
"The Petaluma Police Department takes all threats to the schools seriously and is working diligently to identify those responsible," said the department in a post on Facebook on Wednesday. "We are actively working with school officials to maintain the safety and security of our students and campuses."
The district has not received any threats related to any other schools or any other days, according to Harris.
"Our graduating seniors deserve to celebrate such a significant accomplishment together on June 10, especially given all we've come through as a community over these past two years," said Harris in his statement. "It is a top priority for Petaluma City Schools that we are able to celebrate with a safe and successful end of the year and commencement ceremony. We remain alert, focused on the safety of our students and staff, and are confident we will come through this challenge safely, together as a community."
The investigation is currently active and ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective D. Boyd at 707-778-4334.
