A pair of Bay Area officers turned into a SEAL team last weekend in the North Bay.

Police rescued a lost baby seal wandering across a San Rafael roadway on Saturday.

Two San Rafael policemen responded to reports of an otter in the area of East San Francisco Blvd. and Grange Way, later determined to be a baby Northern Fur Seal.

The animal, named "Ivy," was found flapping in the roadway "narrowly avoiding being hit by several cars," police said.

Volunteers assisted police in safely rescuing Ivy and took her to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito for care where she will stay for an undetermined duration of time.

Officials don’t know how Ivy ended up at this location.

Northern Fur Seals are classified as a threatened species, which the EPA defines as "plants and animals that are likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range."

Authorities said they will keep the public updated on her progress.
