Police received multiple calls at approximately 1:11 p.m. of a neighbor on Dove Court who was repeatedly shooting at homes and cars while walking down the street, officials said in a press release on Monday. Officers arrived to find the male perpetrator armed with a rifle, and wearing military-style camouflage clothing along with what they later discovered was body armor.

During the police response, the man barricaded himself inside his home. Residents in the area were either told to shelter-in-place or were safely evacuated by police.

Authorities created a perimeter around the man's home as he stayed inside. During the standoff, he "intermittently fired" his rifle at officers, homes and vehicles over the course of several hours. Officials said he fired approximately 30 times in the direction of officers and other residents during the standoff.

Members of Antioch's Crisis Negotiation Team made "numerous attempts to contact the suspect, to de-escalate the situation and negotiate a peaceful resolution." The subject refused their request to exit the house peacefully, authorities said.

The situation culminated at approximately 7:07 p.m. when a fire erupted inside the man's home and spread to the garage, prompting him to flee the residence. He escaped to the side yard, where he was contacted by SWAT team members.

"Upon contact, SWAT officers fired their weapons and struck the suspect," police said. No other details were released about what happened during the altercation.

Officials immediately administered first aid to the gunman, however he succumbed to his wounds at the scene and was pronounced dead.

An investigation is ongoing. No other information, including possible reasons why the gunman was firing bullets throughout the neighborhood as well as his identity, was released.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Monday he is conducting an independent review of the shooting.
