Law enforcement agencies are searching for a man who allegedly broke into an occupied Antioch home and shot a family dog after a police car chase.
The Antioch Police Department said in a Facebook post that on Saturday at about 6:30 p.m., the Oakley Police Department was pursuing a stolen vehicle.
During the chase, the driver led police into downtown Antioch, crashed into a parked car and fled the vehicle. The driver was caught a few blocks away and arrested, officials said.
However, another suspect who was in the car and apparently had a handgun ran from the car and into a nearby yard on W 3rd St., according to law enforcement.
“As he jumped into a rear yard, he was approached by the homeowner’s dog, which he shot,” police wrote. “He then attempted to gain entry into the house and eventually shot out the rear sliding glass door while the homeowner and his 14-year-old son were in the living room.”
The homeowner and his son escaped out the front window unharmed, but the suspect stole car keys and a green mechanic’s coverall before running from the home toward K St., authorities said.
The injured dog was taken to an emergency vet by an Antioch Police officer and officials said it is in stable condition.
Police described the suspect as a white or Hispanic male in his early 20’s, standing approximately 5 foot 9 inches tall with a thin build.
Oakley police have custody of the driver and the investigation is ongoing.
Officers are urging anyone with information to call the Antioch Police Department at (925) 778-2441, or the Oakley Police Department at (925) 646-2441.
