As the campaign to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom swings into full gear, California’s homelessness crisis is becoming a central issue.

Republican candidates challenging Newsom for the governor seat took aim at his record on homelessness, as in a recent campaign ad from former businessman and attorney, John Cox.

Cox's campaign features a homelessness plan that emphasizes mandatory treatment for mental illness.

Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer also highlighted the issue in a recent campaign stop. He said he wants to create more state-owned homeless shelters, while clearing encampments out from public spaces.

"I fundamentally believe that every human being in California has a right to shelter," Faulconer said. "I also believe that when we provide it, they have an obligation to use it."

"You can’t be worried about political incorrectness, you have to be worried about actually making a difference," he added.

Since campaigning for the office, Gov. Newsom has set homelessness as a central focus and boosted the state’s budget for homeless aid by billions of dollars.
