San Francisco’s Mission District has a new bit of musical history, as local artists dedicated a mural of Carlos Santana and his family right outside the 24th Street BART station entrance on Friday.
The mural has been a year in the making, with a team of local artists putting in the work to honor the Santana family’s musical legacy and their contribution to Latin rock history. The Mural reads "La Familia Santana," featuring legendary guitarist Carlos and his brother, Jorge, who died last May.

Their story runs right through the Mission, and Mayor London Breed joined the ceremony to celebrate the new art piece and the local legend.
"You know his history. You know how he put this neighborhood on the map performing throughout the entire world," Breed said. "All of us are not just here because we love and celebrate you, but because we love and celebrate your community and family."

Carlos Santana's son, Salvador, was present for the dedication and included in the mural. He reflected on the family's Mission District roots.
"We were meant to be here. Right here in this beautiful part of the world, this beautiful and impactful part of the world. And now the biggest honor is, we here," he said.
Friday's dedication ceremony was really a celebration of both older and younger generations coming together to paying their respects to a local icon and his legendary family.
"Santana family en La Mission. You can't say 'La Mission' without 'Familia de Santana!' You can't say 'La Familia de Santana' without 'La Mission!' Viva 'La Mission,'" Salvador Santana chanted.

Next time you roll through the 24th Street BART station, you'll have a little piece of musical history staring right back at you.
