Kyle Moffat, 25, died on Saturday after being taken to a nearby hospital from Palisades Tahoe Resort, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office confirmed to KCBS Radio in an email on Wednesday morning. Resort officials told KCBS Radio that his cause of death is still being investigated, but they believe he fell and sustained a head injury while skiing without a helmet.

Palisades Tahoe Resort officials told KCBS Radio in an email on Tuesday that the resort’s ski patrol found an unresponsive man at 4:21 p.m. on Saturday after a guest reported a skier was injured.

An ambulance transported him to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Nevada County – Palisades Tahoe is located in nearby Placer County – where he was pronounced dead at 5:43 p.m., according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office.

Nevada County Sheriff's officials identified him as Moffatt to KNTV and Sacramento's KCRA, telling KCBS Radio on Tuesday afternoon that his family had been notified of his death.

Reno’s KRNV first identified the man as a San Francisco resident in a report on Sunday, citing officials who said he was skiing in a group of five other people. The outlet reported that none of the people saw the accident and that he was found in a pond.

A Palisades Tahoe spokesperson told KCBS Radio that the man was found "off the closed Sunnyside trail."

"The cause of death is still under investigation, but preliminary findings show that the man, who was not wearing a helmet, fell and suffered head trauma," the spokesperson said, adding that the resort's "deepest sympathies go out to" Moffat's family and friends.
