Newly elected Mayor Matt Mahan wants the city to get back to basics.
He set up five transition committees focused on different aspects of governance in January, areas that are ripe for improvement – homelessness, community safety, clean neighborhoods, downtown vibrancy, and planning and permitting.
On Monday, he outlined their purposes and what can be expected from them ahead of Tuesday's City Council meeting.
"The goal, of course, was to identify new approaches to solving our most significant challenges, in the pursuit of a more focused, accountable, and better-informed budgeting process," said Mahan.
The recommendations of these committees will be presented to the City Council on Tuesday.
The committee focused on public safety looked specifically at the time taken to respond to 911 emergency calls in the city.
"I think it's really important that we are both filling vacancies and increasing staffing levels to bring down response time," he said.
Another committee made recommendations on the issues facing the unhoused community in the city.
A big goal being prioritized by the committee is completing the goal of adding 1,000 units of interim housing for the population, as well as going out and finding the next sites for emergency interim services.
The others were focused on cleaning up neighborhoods, planning, and revitalizing downtown.
"We all want to see a vibrant downtown," said Mahan.
The idea is that these committees will help Mahan put together his city agenda ahead of the March budget discussions.
