SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS RADIO) – Mayor Sam Liccardo is calling for an investigation into how the San Jose Police Department handles sexual misconduct cases following multiple allegations against officers.

Before officer Matthew Dominguez was charged with masturbating in front of a family while responding to a call, there was a previous sexual allegation, and before former code enforcement officer William Gerry was sentenced for extorting sex and bribes from massage parlors, there were anonymous complaints.
In a press conference Monday, Liccardo said Dominguez and Gerry should not have been interacting with the public while being granted due process, questioning the department for allowing the officers to remain on duty. "I think we all understand that certain facts warrant somebody simply being taken off the job. Period," he said.
Moving forward, Liccardo said it is his intention to get to the bottom of the situation and "ensure that the public has an understanding of what we're doing differently."
During the conference, San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata said his officers do amazing work every day and he welcomes the audit to see how processes can be improved. "We don't tolerate any criminal misconduct here at the San Jose Police Department," Mata affirmed.
The mayor's memo now heads to the rules committee. A specific set of actions from the police department is expected in the coming days.
Just last Wednesday, the San Jose Police Department released a seven point plan to address five cases of officer misconduct that occurred in recent months.
