A San Jose woman has died after being struck by a recycling truck on Wednesday morning, as the city is on pace to far surpass the number of pedestrians killed last year.
The San Jose Police Department said in a release on Wednesday afternoon that the adult woman killed on Wednesday was the eighth pedestrian to die in 2022, and the 11th person this year to die in a traffic collision. There have been 10 fatal collisions in 2022, according to police.

Twenty-three pedestrians were killed in 2021, while 60 people died in traffic accidents. The latter total, matched in 2019 and 2015, was the highest in two decades, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Police said the woman was in the middle of the street with her trash cans on the 400 block of Fontanelle Court. She was struck after walking in front of the truck and into the driver's blind spot, according to a police investigation.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene.
Officers responded to Fontanelle Court at 7:49 a.m., following reports of a traffic collision with a vehicle and a pedestrian. The driver, a man, cooperated with officers and stayed on the scene. Police said there was "no indication" the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office will publicly identify the woman after her next of kin has been notified. San Jose police said anyone with information should contact Det. Keith Aldinger by calling 408-277-4654.
