San Jose police on Thursday afternoon arrested a man suspected of holding an explosive device.

The San Jose Police Department tweeted it had safely separated a "despondent" adult man from a suspected explosive device, minutes after evacuating the surrounding area.

A Bomb Unit officer took possession of the suspected explosive and rendered it safe, the department said.

Police closed Story Road between Highway 101 and Via Ferrari and evacuated "several" buildings near Olinder Court and Felipe Ave. while negotiating with the man for over an hour.

The man emerged from what police said was a stolen recreational vehicle in the area, holding a hand grenade and saying he wanted police to shoot him.

Police then evacuated buildings near an industrial complex in the area. The nearby 76 gas station at Felipe Ave. and Story Road was not forced to evacuate, an employee told KCBS Radio. She remained inside her store and said the situation looked "scary," but she said it wasn't clear to her what was going on.

The man was arrested after putting the grenade down, police said. He was then booked into jail on an outstanding warrant and possession of an explosive device.

Police eventually reopened Story Road just prior to 2 p.m.
