San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told KCBS Radio's Kris Ankarlo and Margie Shafer just after 6:30 p.m. there didn't appear to be an active shooter.

"It appears that the shooting resulted from a fight between two or more individuals, and a gun did go off with one injured victim," Liccardo said in an interview. "But the shooting has not persisted, and I think that's important for people to know because I know there are many who are worried about their loved ones there at the mall."

Liccardo didn't specify the alleged shooter was apprehended, and he didn't "want to give" KCBS Radio "a precise location" of the shooting.

"I don't want to give any more information that might not be accurate," Liccardo said. "At this point, we know it happened in the area of the mall, and it appears to be contained based on the number of officers we have there and the fact the shooting stopped."

Officials encouraged nearby residents and shoppers to shelter in place while the shooting is under investigation. Police said it would "take several hours to clear the mall." Just before 8:45 p.m. on Monday, the department said it was continuing to search.

A reunification center is being set up at the Home Depot at 920 Blossom Hill Road, according to police, while a number of nearby streets were closed to traffic.
