A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in San Jose in what police said is the city's 24th homicide this year.

The San Jose Police Department said in a release Wednesday the boy was pronounced dead at Regional Medical Center, where he arrived around 4 p.m.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 2900 block of Little Wood Lane at 3:47 p.m., finding the teenager had sustained at least one gunshot wound.

Police said the victim was part of a group that exchanged gunfire with residents of a Little Wood Lane home, and that he was "connected to the shooting" officers initially responded to.

Homicide detectives are conducting an "extensive follow-up investigation," the department said. Anyone with information on the incident can call (408) 277-5283.
