A San Jose elementary school had to shelter in place for several hours on Wednesday while police officers responded to a situation with an armed person.

According to the San Jose Police Department, on Wednesday morning at 10:53 a.m. officers were called to Empire Gardens Elementary School about a "despondent male" who is on the campus armed with a knife.
The officers were able to contain the man relatively quickly, according to a post the department made at 11:39 a.m.
Along with officers, the Mobile Crisis Assessment team has arrived on the campus to aid in the situation.
"We are continuing to keep the suspect engaged in conversation/negotiation working towards a peaceful resolution," said a post by the department. "Students are not in danger as we have the suspect contained."
As of 1:41 p.m. officers were able to take the suspect into custody, according to a post by the San Jose Police Department on Twitter. He will be given a mental health assessment.
Criminal charges have not yet been filed against him.
