San Mateo County has partnered with two health care companies to increase local ICU bed availability as COVID-19 cases continue to soar.

Licensed medical professionals from AMI Expeditionary Healthcare will staff up to 10 intensive care unit beds in Dignity Health's Sequoia Hospital. The extra staff will help out at the Redwood City hospital for at least 30 days.

The first five-bed unit is expected to be staffed within a week, with the second five-bed unit available the following week.

"We’re fortunate to be able to connect resources to key partners to support our local community and our neighbors during this crisis," said County Manager Mike Callagy said in a news release Monday.

The county's Medical Health Operational Area Coordinator program will coordinate placement of patients in the units. As of Monday, San Mateo County has reported over 21,000 coronavirus cases and 198 deaths from complications related to COVID-19.
