Those living in a series of homeless encampments under Highway 101 in San Rafael have packed up their belongings as they face eviction.

"It just came like the weather, we have to deal with it," said one resident, Chris.

Crews with Caltrans and the City of San Rafael notified residents of the eviction, which took effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday, ahead of time.

The residents are being moved to a fenced area at the north end of an underpass where they’ll each be provided with a tent.

"We build it, as soon as we feel like we’re at home, it’s all nice and pretty...we have to move it," said camp resident Christal, who previously lived in an encampment in Sausalito. “Imagine having to destroy your life every other week.”

Christal built what she calls the tee pee temple in the San Rafael encampment, an accumulation of odd art pieces. It’s become a community center of sorts, she said.

Christal, along with others, are concerned about safety with the move. The fences can make some feel trapped.

Homeless residents did protest the eviction as the moving process began with signs and megaphones, but most accepted that ultimately they would have to move.
